Emilie Berls

Jewelry

I participated in my first silversmithing class in the Fall of 2005 and quickly decided upon a career in jewelry creation. With a background in theatrical costume design, I feel I have a flair for the dramatic, an understandng of the visual signals provided by accessories and an awareness for the wearability of my artwork.

I believe that jewelry is part of a person's visual vocabulary: a way to communicate things about ourselves to other people without saying a word. My designs are intended to stimulate the imagination and blend elegance with whimsy to express the creative complexity of the wearer.

I use combinations of Copper, Argentium Sterling Silver, traditional Sterling Silver, 14kt, 18kt, and 24kt Gold to execute my designs and prefer using hand fabrication techniques that employ heat and hammers to shape the metal. My personal motto: "the bigger the torch, the better!".
