Joan Bazzel began her artistic career as a child attending art classes at a local art museum. She won a full scholarship in art from the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland, CA. and the University of California at Berkeley. While in California, she became interested in fabricating jewelry and started her own business in Art Jewelry in the early 1970’s. She was drawn to the vibrant color of enameling with glass fused to metal, and learned the art of cloisonné which was the perfect medium to combine with her knowledge of jewelry fabrication.

Joan moved to Franklin, NC. In 1991 and became a member of the Southern Highland Craft Guild, and the resident enamellist at the John C. Campbell Folk School in Brasstown, NC. She held that position for 5 years and conducted many enameling workshops in the studio she and her husband Mike refurbished for the school. She has taught enameling in workshops for guilds and schools as well as private instruction.

Joan became fascinated with the optical world of kaleidoscopes as a vehicle for enamelwork on copper tubing. She is a member of the Brewster Kaleidoscope Society and specializes in wearable kaleidoscope necklaces. Vintage Mother of Pearl Buttons is another of Joan’s fascinations, and she has turned her focus from collecting the most beautiful iridescent MOP buttons to designing unique jewelry with them. Joan has been exhibiting at Woolworth’s Walk in Asheville, NC. since it opened in 2002. Her work is in collections and galleries worldwide, and may be seen on her web-site.
